How do I prepare for a breathwork session?

Whatever is right for you works for us! The starting point is coming to a session with an intention. You might start by considering what’s happening in your life right now, and we can work on identifying your intention together. What do you want to release? What do you want to invite in? Are you looking to focus on stress reduction, abundance creation, gratitude or … all of it is welcome! Waiting works too. We can see what shows up when we meet.

A few things to note before our time together:

  • It’s preferable to do breathwork on an empty stomach, so plan to have your last meal 2-3 hours prior to your session.
  • Bring water and wear comfortable clothing.
  • For online sessions, prepare your space in a safe and cozy way. Options could include blankets, eye mask, headphones, candle, etc.
  • Make sure you will not be interrupted and have space to lay down flat and be comfortable. A bed, couch or yoga mat all work well, and a pillow under the knees can be nice.
  • Please be free from distractions. Make sure you phone is turned off. This is your time to reset, reflect and rejuvenate. .
  • Come with an open mind and heart, with zero expectations based on what you’ve heard can happen during the breathwork session. Instead, go with the flow.
  • Some people like to journal after the session, so consider bringing a journal and pen.

What happens during a 1:1 breathwork session?

Each breathwork session is personal and designed with your intention and needs in mind. Each and every experience is different. Most breathwork sessions are about 60-75 mins. The session begins with a safe space to connect and develop an intention. I will always review what to expect and teach you the breath patterns we will work with during that session. You will then lay down in a comfortable space, and we’ll begin the breathwork journey with curated music. You will be guided during the session, and I will cue you when to begin a breath pattern. You will breathe for 20-30 minutes with the invitation for emotional release and breath holds to really allow the energy to shift within. We will end the session with grounding and reflections.

Anything and everything is welcome within the session. It is common to experience different sensations and emotions. As the body releases stuck energy or emotionality it may bring up the need to release or express tears, anger, sadness, fear, bliss, joy or happiness. Whatever is meant to be released will show up, and you can trust your mind-body-spirit to receive exactly what it needs. You may also not feel any emotions during the session, and that’s OK too.

Here are some common reactions that can happen during a session. You may experience some of these or none of these. Every session is different.

Physical:

  • Temperature Fluctuations—your body temperature may fluctuate from hot to cold as energy is released from the body.
  • Tingling—you may feel lightheaded or sense tingling in the hands, feet and/or around the mouth (tetany) or in certain areas, depending on where energy is moving.
  • Movement—your body may want to shake, vibrate or move around as energy discharges.
  • Muscle tightness—energy can collect in the body and may feel knotted, tight or sore. This usually passes within a few minutes of returning to a relaxed breath.

Emotional:

  • Releases—you may feel the need to release energy through vocalizing, crying, laughing, screaming. All of this is a part of the energetic release.
  • Emotions—many emotions may come to the surface, ready to be released. You may see visuals or past memories. You also may fall asleep, which is OK because in that moment your body needed deep rest.

Is breathwork safe?

Yes, breathwork is safe; however, breathwork is not to be used in place of any type of therapy such as counseling, psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, mental health care or substance abuse treatment. Please make sure you are using breathwork to complement, not replace these healing modalities with your doctor’s advice.

A signed medical and liability release form is required before engaging in breathwork. If you have any medical conditions or are currently taking medication, please consult your doctor before starting breathwork. Medical conditions may include but are not limited to high blood pressure, depression, pregnancy, kidney disease, heart disease, detached retina, chronic panic attacks and asthma.

As a facilitator, I am just that. I am not healing you; you are doing that yourself. I teach breathwork from a trauma-informed perspective. What this means is that before we start doing any breathing, I make sure you know exactly what to expect, discuss any health concerns or trauma that you feel I should be aware of. We start slowly and work up to longer sessions and more active breathing patterns. Feeling safe in your body is the foundation for healing to take place. My goal is to hold a safe space where you can fully engage with the breath and let your experience unfold.

Equine Experiences

Do I need horse experience?

Absolutely not! Some participants have lots of horse experience, and some have never touched a horse.

I am very knowledgeable and experienced with horses. Will I get anything out of this?

Absolutely, yes! You probably know quite well that horses can “feel” everything when you interact with them. Equine Experience session(s) may deepen your knowledge and appreciation of what great teachers horses can be to us.

I am scared of horses! Can I still participate safely?

Yes, you can! We make every effort to ensure participants feel safe and respected. We will never force you to do anything you don’t feel comfortable with and will always respect your boundaries and choices. In addition, we will educate you on horse safety before you interact with them.

What should I wear/bring?

Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing that you don’t mind getting a little grubby. It is important to wear closed-toed shoes (which may step in manure). We’ll begin our time together in a small office that has a bathroom. Bring a water bottle and a journal if you’d like. In the summer, it’s good to wear sunscreen and bring a sunhat and sunglasses. In the cooler months, you may want a hat and gloves. MOST IMPORTANT … bring your open, curious mind and heart!

What if it rains?

We will watch the forecast, and if it looks like light rain, we’ll conduct the session. If it looks like pouring rain or threatening weather, we must reschedule. We will contact you via email or text prior to your session to confirm if the weather becomes an issue.

What is Equine Experiential Learning or Equine Assisted Learning?

First, some context. As you may be aware, in the equine world there are many different approaches to healing. Haberman Harmonics does not offer psychotherapy. Rather, Equine Experiential Learning (EEL) or Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) are our specialties, and our approach is experiential in nature. This means that participants work with certified EEL guides and horses to learn about themselves and others. By engaging with the horses, participants can process and discuss behaviors, feelings, thoughts and patterns. Experiential learning is “learning by doing” and engages the heart, mind and body. Studies have shown that people learn best through direct experiences.

What happens in an Equine Experiential Learning session?

Sessions take place outdoors on the ground. Activities may include exercises with the horses at liberty in a pasture or round pen where they’re free to be themselves. Or we may use lead ropes while we’re working together. Much of the work we do with horses and participants involves mind-body-spirit awareness, breathwork and meditation. Reflective sessions may happen with the horses individually and/or while they are together in a herd.

Why are horses helpful for self-development and personal growth?

Think of horses as a near instantaneous bio-feedback mechanism. Even though they’re large, powerful animals, horses are actually preyed upon in nature. To survive, they therefore maintain a heightened awareness of their environment at all times, and their ability to assess the intent or energies of other living beings that share their environment is profound. Horses can easily sense our emotions. They can serve as mirrors and reflect the energies they interact with. As we communicate with them—just by being present—they provide authentic, direct feedback. Horses are masters of intuitive, non-verbal communication and can help us listen to our body and open our hearts.

What is your cancellation policy?

You may cancel or reschedule your session at least 48 hours in advance with no penalty. For sessions canceled or rescheduled with less than 48 hours notice, you will be billed at half the session rate.
